Did I say stop, it'll never stop, but may never reduce anytime soon.
You know why?
Provided there's prevalence of poverty and economic crisis in the country, people must keep seeing marriage as an escape route from poverty.
It is undoubtedly true that anyone who makes money automatically becomes more specific with their choices.
If a guy is poor, he throws away most of the qualities he seeks in a lady and settle with anyone who's willing to manage with him. But when such person sees money tomorrow, he changes (not all). He starts seeing many flaws in someone he once adored and cherished.
Also, some ladies pretend not to notice any flaw in a rich guy who approaches them. His wealth tends to blind their eyes and all they could imagine is ending up with him and cruising in good life.
Have you noticed that when a lady is well to do and can provide for herself all you can gift her, she becomes more specific with her choices and takes less shits from men.
This type of ladies are mostly termed rude, but truth be told, most of them ain't rude, they just know their worth.
Knowing your worth does not mean being so rich and arrogant, rather it means having enough to provide your needs and essential wants. It makes you feel comfortable and have self confidence. It makes you know what you can condone and the things you can't. It'll make you to see beyond the guy's wealth and look for the man in him.
"Ebuka, I can't wait to get married so I could quit this job, it's too stressful"
I smiled and responded;
"What if he marries you because you have a good job, what do you think would be his reaction when you resign?"
There was silence.
"Inasmuch as he may not marry you for the money you earn, remember you've been providing for your family and won't stop because you got married or now heap it on him.
If you must resign, let it be a mutual agreement between him and you even before you say yes to his proposal. Or let it be because you are planning on something better." I concluded.
Imagine if our country is one with a good government that provides all the basic needs of the masses.
Imagine living in a house that the government subsidized the rent.
Imagine having constant power at a cheap rate.
imagine having unlimited internet access at a very cheap rate.
Imagine the government subsidizing the transportation cost.
Imagine the government providing soft loans for start up entrepreneurs without stress.
Imagine the government gifting cars to every civil servant.
Imagine the price of petrol coming down.
Do you think anyone would be looking for whom to depend on when all those things are in place?
Done imagining? Oya come to reality, we're still where we were!
I know people will talk about contentment, but I want to ask, can anyone be contended with poverty?
Who likes poverty?
How can you tell someone that barely feeds 3 times daily to be contended. With what please, hunger?
The person must be looking for an escape route.
People will keep saying that they prefer to cry in G Wagon than to to smile in Keke. Yes, that's to tell you that people prefer to be rich and sad than to be poor and happy.
But wait, is there any joy that comes with poverty? I don't know. You can tell me if you do..
Well, in all, choose wisely. Don't let poverty drive you to eternal regret. No matter how hard it seems, keep working, you may be the one that'll elevate your family.
Some of us here will also be in possession of power tomorrow, and when you do, remember you once spoke against bad governance and should do everything within your power to make things right.
Remember hate speech attracts death penalty. Mana anyi macha na aha bu ndi uchu. (asikwana na m kwuru.)
